Heartwood Theater Summer Camps

Release Date: May 20. 2013

School is almost out, and summer camps are just around the corner with Heartwood Theater’s 11th annual Youth Theater Summer Camp. Sessions run throughout June 24th through July 10th, for campers entering 1st grade thru 12th grade.

“Sprouts Camp” returns this summer, for students entering 1st or 2nd grade, next fall. Led by Elise Voigt and Millie Santiago, with movement workshops by Karen Montanaro, this session runs July 8-10, from 9:00-11:30am. Students will focus on imaginative play, movement and simple crafts – a great introductory theater experience for young children.

“Kids’ Theater,” led by returning instructor Alison Machaiek, is an eight day camp running June 24-28 and July 1-3, 9am-1pm, for students entering grades 3-8. Campers will produce a short play and enjoy challenging workshops in mime/dance & mask theater and movement. This is a process oriented camp experience, focusing on skill building and ensemble work. A great confidence building experience!

A newly formatted, user friendly, “Theater Electives Program” is available this summer, to students entering grades 5-12. Campers may participate in any (or all) of five distinct areas of focus from June 24 – July 10: musical theater voice coaching, mask theater & movement, mime & dance, acting & improv, and stage combat.

Musical Theater Voice Coaching with Beth Preston is an 8 day session, running from 10:30am-noon, June 24-28 and July 1-3. No experience necessary.

Mask Theater & Movement with returning performer/teacher Beverly Mann, is a 3 day session from noon-1:30 on July 1-3.

Mime & Dance, always popular with students, will be led by Karen Montanaro, June 24-28 from 1:30-3:00.

Acting & Improv, taught by Griff Braley, is an 8 day session of skill building, June 24-28 from noon – 1:30 and July 1-3 from 1:30-3:00pm.

Stage Combat, with renowned fight choreographer Mark Bedell, is tentatively scheduled for July 8-10, from 9am-noon. Workshops will include hand to hand combat, falling, and swordplay (subject to sufficient enrollment).
