Last Train to Nibroc

Last Train to Nibroc is Arlene Hutton's quiet, subtle character study of life in the early 20th century and the sometime complex, sometimes fateful fortune of two young lovers.

On a cross-country train ride, May and Raleigh meet and begin a life-long relationship. The first of a trilogy, the play explores the author's Kentucky roots as she imagines the budding picturesque relationship of her father and mother, May and Raleigh, read by Elise Voigt and Steven Shema.

"I was drawn to Last Train to Nibroc about 10 years ago when I used an excerpt for an acting class," says Heartwood's Artistic Director Griff Braley. "The writing sat comfortably with the actors, even while it read quite simply. The unexpected turns in the script demonstrated a strong understanding of the dangers of such a piece of Americana. Hutton has made her way through a number of similar pieces to great effect. Both Elise and Steve have been a joy to work with, as always. Their chemistry and seriousness about the theater are a boon to the work."

These performances of Last Train to Nibroc are part of Heartwood's "Page-to-Stage Festival" at Skidompha Library in Damariscotta, which runs from January 13-30.
